Hello, there!

I am a Mountain Leader and an assistant Cave Leader. To read about me, go to the about me page (listed above).

The other pages listed above are on specific areas of interest to mountain walking, or about my work as a Mountain Leader. The posts listed below are updates on what I have been doing recently.

Why hire a Mountain Leader?

Every year, thousands of people venture into the mountains without a Mountain Leader, so what difference can going with a Mountain Leader make?

Perhaps you are not experienced in being in the mountains, and want some support and guidance. There is so much to think about: where to go, what to wear, what to carry, how to find your way, what to do if the weather gets bad,... the list goes on. I can make sense of it all and bring it all together so that you actually get up into the mountains and have a good experience. After that, you may not need me any more, which is how it works.

Perhaps you are new to the area, and want to be taken on some walks without the hassle of doing your own research, with someone has been there before and knows his way around. I have a repertoire of some well-known routes that are a good introduction to the areas where I work, and some less well-known routes away from the crowds. I am also very open to trying out new routes with you, perhaps to develop your skill at planning routes, or just to go somewhere new.

Perhaps you want to challenge yourself in the mountain environment, and need someone to watch your back while you test your physical limits. This is a great way to spend time in the mountains, but if you want to do it with me, let's make sure that my limits are higher than yours, before we start!

Perhaps you need help looking after a family or group. I can walk at the front, or at the back, or somewhere in the middle, and make things easier for you and your companions.

Why hire me?

There are lots of good Mountain Leaders around, so why hire me?

The main reason is that I am gentle and supportive, and I genuinely enjoy sharing my expertise. I love moving people from a position of not being able to do something to a position of being able to do it. I love introducing people to activities which I enjoy. I am very enthusiastic about mountain walking (personally and professionally), and this enthusiasm rubs off on the people I take walking.

Also, I just want you to have a safe, enjoyable and fulfilling experience in the mountains. I am not interested on pushing you to achieve arbitrary targets, and I won't march you around in misery from peak to peak.

I am the strong chatty type (not the strong silent type): if that fits the bill, give me a call!
